An executive from Mechelen: “I spoke to the Standard this summer”

At Standard, we could really use reinforcements in defense. During the summer, he had one of the current starters of FC Mechelen in his sights. But the transfer did not take place. This is what he declared to La Derniere Heure.

Touba close to Standard

FC Mechelen rents Ahmed Touba from Basaksehir and the former Club Brugge player does not feel too bad in Antwerp. He explains why he did not join Standard this summer. However, the Rouches would have liked to attract him.

“During the summer, I was in contact with several clubs when I decided to leave Basaksehir. I spoke to the Standard, but my arrival there depended on different parameters. I spoke to Fergal Harkin and Ivan Leko in a hotel in Liège, but I ended up joining Mechelen for different reasons,” said Touba.

Manchester United

Touba’s career is quite eventful. Yet he seemed to be on the verge of a great career. He made his debut for Club Brugge, which sparked a lot of interest. “After my professional debut, I attracted a lot of interest while I was at the end of my contract. Very big clubs were interested, like Manchester United. The manager, Vincent Mannaert, wanted to keep me. He asked me how much I wanted to earn. I answered a figure that seemed much too high to me. I wanted him to refuse, but he said yes (laughs).”

The big day has not arrived. Touba is not yet thinking about the next step. “There is little chance that I will leave in January, although things can move very quickly in football. I came to Mechelen to qualify us for play-off 1, then we will see what happens. I will be 27 years old and it will be an important moment in my career. »
