MLB: Gleyber Torres joins the Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year, US$15 million contract with former New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres on Friday.

A two-time All-Star, Torres hit .265, 138 homers and 441 RBIs in seven seasons with the Yankees, who acquired him from the Chicago Cubs in 2016.

The 28-year-old averaged .257 last season. His 15 home runs, 63 RBIs and 26 doubles helped the Yankees finish first in the American League East and advance to the World Series, which the Los Angeles Dodgers won in five games.

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris told reporters that Torres, who also played shortstop with the Yankees, is expected to play second base in Detroit. Colt Keith, who occupied this position for the majority of the last campaign, should migrate to first base.

Torres, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, originally signed his first contract with the Cubs in 2013. He was then traded to the Yankees along with Adam Warren, Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford for late-game specialist Aroldis Chapman.
