Since 1871, this date has been a public holiday in England, called “Boxing Day”, literally “box day”. Several versions circulate about its provenance but the most widespread is that in the 19th century among families with domestic staff, servants were authorized to take a day off the day after Christmas. And with that, they were entitled to a box, a boxwith some presents.
