The Gorée Sports Union celebrated its 100th anniversary this Saturday, during several significant activities, in the presence of personalities from the sporting world who have had to mark the history of the club, but also the Senegalese sporting world. In addition to the new coach of the senior national team, Pape Thiaw, there were members of the Senegalese Football Federation including vice-president Cheikh Seck.
An opportunity for the president of the club and mayor of the island of Gorée, also president of the Senegalese Football Federation, to revisit history and salute the journey achieved by an entire team.
“Celebrating 100 years is important for our clubs. We have here many generations of athletes, sportsmen in general, footballers who have marked the history of our club, but also managers, technicians, supervisors, administrators, without forgetting the press, it's a whole », Confided Me Augustin Senghor.
Taking advantage of the ceremony, the president of the club, created in 1924, revisited history.
“I also just want to say and you will definitely have read it in the paper.
History is always called to be rectified, to be corrected or completed because often, you have seen that in our jerseys, all those who played wore a logo where we put 1933. This is not false. We should not think that by celebrating the hundred years today, we are denying this date of 1933 which is important because administrative and legal recognition counts in the life of a human being.
But also in the life of a moral person. It happens, until now in our countries, in our country, especially in Africa, that someone is born and is sometimes only declared ten years later. And this is what happened to the Gorean Sports Union,” explained Me Augustin Senghor. Before adding: “It was Paris Dakar which made it possible to retrace an ignored point in the history of Gorée, since this article recalls the circumstances of the creation of the Gorée Sports Union in 1924. That means, three years after the creation of Joan of Arc. We can say that it was born from the flanks of Joan of Arc.”
A highlight of the celebration of 100 years is the inauguration of the club store on the island to allow fans and football lovers to have access to equipment bearing the image of the winning island club. several times of the championship title and the National Cup.
The festivities which continued yesterday were enhanced by the football final with the Mayor's Cup.
