The International Ski Federation (FIS) and several major national federations, including Swiss-Ski, have agreed on the centralization of international media rights for World Cups in different disciplines. From the 2026-2027 season and for eight years, i.e. until 2034, the Zug-based company Infront will be responsible for highlighting the entire package – with the exception of the events organized in Austria, the Ski Austria federation not having subscribed to an arrangement which made Johan Eliasch, president of the FIS, say that “the day is historic for snow sports”.
This announcement, which may seem a little technical to the layman, marks the end of a small cold war between the major winter sports nations – minus Austria – and their umbrella, which began with the election in October 2021 of the Swede of British origin to succeed the late Gian-Franco Kasper. Preferred by Swiss-Ski president Urs Lehmann, Johan Eliasch won over small federations by promising to accelerate the globalization of winter sports and attack the conservatism of a traditionally Alpine-centric environment.
