Highlights of the Paris 2024 sustainability and legacy report:
Carbon footprint cut in half : Paris 2024 emitted a total of 1.59 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, reducing emissions by 54.6% compared to the London 2012 and Rio 2016 averages.
Low carbon sites : With 95% of sites already existing or temporary, Paris 2024 has limited new construction to just three key sites, incorporating low-carbon materials and environmentally friendly designs.
Renewable energies : Renewable energy accounted for 98.4% of all energy produced for the Games. Temporary and existing sites were connected to the public electricity distribution network, which made it possible to limit the use of diesel generators. Electricity came from certified renewable energy providers, such as wind and solar. Temporary photovoltaic projects, such as floating solar panels on the Seine, presented innovative solutions in terms of renewable energy.
Leadership in circular economy : Almost all of the 6 million Games assets were rented, reused, recycled or repurposed. Sports equipment and uniforms were donated to local charities, while unsold items were distributed through specialist resale and donation platforms.
Reduction of plastic: Plastic use has been halved compared to previous Games thanks to measures introduced by Paris 2024 and global Olympic partner Coca-Cola, with initiatives including refillable water stations and the reduction of single-use plastics through the use of drink fountains and biodegradable cutlery.
Low impact mobility : 87% of spectators used public transport or active mobility, supported by extensive cycling infrastructure.
Local economic impact : More than 80% of contracts were awarded to small and medium-sized enterprises (VSE-SME) which are involved in the social economy.
