Biathlon: return to Grand-Bornand for Antonin Guigonnat

This Thursday, during the sprint Grand-Bornand (Haute-Savoie), Antonin Guigonnat will find his audience again. However, his participation in the Bornandine World Cup was in no way certain just three weeks ago.

Relegated to the B team in the spring, he should indeed return to the IBU Cup at the start of the season. A move from group A to group B that he didn’t expect.

“It was really a surprisehe confirmed this Wednesday afternoon during a press briefing organized on the eve of the start of hostilities. It hurt me because it was announced in a somewhat brutal way, it upset me a little. Not even a year and a half before, I was in the world champion relay with a performance that I consider high level. I allowed myself to get offended, I didn’t appreciate it. »

“The project of training with young people motivated me”

Once the anger has passed, Antonin Guigonnat saw the bright side of things: becoming the road captain of the France B team. “I could have told myself that I was preparing on my own, but the project of training with the young people motivated me”he explains.

After having a blast alongside the next generation, the Morzinois has therefore regained his place in the World Cupparticipating this week in the Bornandine races. “The last time I came here to Grand-Bornand, I really didn’t experience it as if it was my last. It scared me a little this summerhe admits. I would have been sad if 2022 was my last Grand-Bornand without me knowing it. This time may not be my last, but I’m going to pretend…”

At 33 years old, the dean of the French team is still putting in great performances, lining up solid top 20 finishes for several races. What if he found the flowers this weekend in the Aravis?
