Thibaut Courtois is the subject of a surprising measure from Atlético Madrid supporters. The former Colchoneros goalkeeper is no longer in the odor of sanctity at the Wanda Metropolitano.
With 154 matches, 4 trophies and a Champions League final under the colors of Atlético Madrid, Thibaut Courtois had well deserved to have his name among the legends of the second club in the Spanish capital. A commemorative plaque paid tribute to Courtois, as well as to all players reaching 100 matches with the Colchonerosnear the new Atlético stadium on the Centennial Promenade.
But, extremely rare: this Tuesday, December 17, the Atlético Madrid supporters’ commission, which meets every year, decided to validate the fact that Courtois’ plaque be removed. This is what the Spanish daily reports Sports World.
In question, of course, the transfer of Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid, the great rival, in 2018. But this fact alone would probably not have been enough for the Belgian’s name to be condemned to criticism. It was rather the attitude of the goalkeeper that led to this decision.
After clumsy statements, Courtois wrote an open letter in 2023 to Atlético Madrid supporters, which could have calmed things down. But this year, provocations between Colchoneros supporters and the Real goalkeeper have aggravated the situation, and probably sealed the fate of Courtois’ commemorative plaque on the Walk of Legends.
“A legend is more than just statistics. Courtois has shown time and time again that he has no respect for Atlético and for us fans. He has no place in our Paseo de las Leyendas “, says a member of the supporters’ commission to Ok Diary. The plaque is expected to be officially removed next June.
