Henry Van Looynicknamed “Rik“, passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legendary career. Born on December 20, 1933 in Grobbendonck, he is considered one of the greatest Belgian cyclists in history. His impressive list of achievements includes all the major classics on the calendar, a feat thatEddy Merckx he himself did not match.

The Story of Rik Van Looy

Coming from a modest family, Rik forged his character and his iron legs by delivering newspapers by bike from the age of 12. Inspired by his idol Rik Van Steenbergenit quickly became “Rik II“, surpassing even its predecessor. Directed by Guillaume Driessens, Van Looy and its famous “red guard” dominated the great classics. In 1961, he made history by becoming the first cyclist to win all five monuments: Milan-Sanremothe Tour of Flanders, -, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy. A professional from the age of 19, he accumulated 501 victories, including two world champion titles (1960 and 1961). His exploits are accompanied by memorable anecdotes, such as his victorious sprint in 1961 in Bern, where his rear wheel disintegrated while crossing the line.

However, his career has not been free of controversy. In 1963, the “betrayal” of Benoni Beheytwhich took away a third world title, divides Belgium and leaves a deep mark Van Looy. Despite his sometimes bitter pride and ambition, Rik enjoyed immense popularity in Flanders as in Wallonia. Passionate about horses and charismatic man, Van Looy had withdrawn from the scene, erasing almost all traces of its glorious past. Today he joins his wife Whatwho was his greatest support. “The Emperor of Herentals” will remain an emblematic figure of Belgian and world .
