Austrian international footballer Guido Burgstaller, under contract at Rapid Vienna, was the victim of an attack in the center of Vienna. He suffered a skull fracture.

Guido Burgstaller will be deprived of football for “several months”. The 35-year-old Austrian international footballer from Rapid Vienna suffered a basilar skull fracture after being attacked by an unknown person in the center of Vienna, according to a statement from his club published on December 16. This serious injury was caused by a fall following a violent blow from the attacker.

“Guido was immediately examined and taken to hospital in the Austrian capital. Unfortunately, he will have to remain under medical supervision for some time and it is clear that he will not return to football-related activities for several months,” informs the Rapid Vienna.

“We are convinced that the competent authorities will quickly bring to justice the author of this attack, who has not yet been identified,” adds the historic Austrian football club, currently 3rd in its championship.

After a drunken evening

According to the daily Kronen Zeitung, the attack took place on Saturday December 14 at dawn, at the end of a drunken evening. Guido Burgstaller, accompanied by friends, allegedly tried to end an altercation before receiving blows.

Guido Burgstaller (26 caps, 2 goals), former player of Schalke 04 and Cardiff, has been playing at Rapid Vienna since 2022 after a first spell during the 2011-2014 period. His stat sheet shows 8 goals and 6 assists in 24 games in all competitions for what is supposed to be the final season of his career. He announced last July his desire to hang up his crampons next summer.
