Canada will face Hungary in the first round of Davis Cup qualifying at the IGA stadium in Montreal on February 1 and 2, 2025, Tennis Canada announced in a press release Monday morning.
Montreal will therefore host a Davis Cup duel for a second year in a row. The representatives of the maple leaf defeated South Korea 3-1 at the same place in qualifying last February.
The captain of the Canadian team Frank Dancevic then counted on a team made up of Quebecers Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau, Ontarians Milos Raonic and Liam Draxl as well as British-Columbian Vasek Pospisil.
“We are all very happy to organize another Davis Cup match and present it at the IGA stadium in Montreal,” commented tournament director Valérie Tétreault. Last year, we played our first Davis Cup match at home since 2018, and we really felt the passion of the crowd, who were cheering not only for Canadian players, but also for local talents, like Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau, who grew up a few minutes from the stadium. »
Canada has a record of nine victories in its last 10 home matches in this prestigious men’s team tennis competition.
The winning country will advance to the second and final round of qualifying, while the loser will be relegated to World Group 1.
“There’s nothing like playing in Canada, representing your country and having the support of the crowd,” Dancevic said. Although I am very proud that our team reached the quarter-finals for a third consecutive year, our goal for 2025 is to repeat our feat of 2022, when we made a new page in history by being crowned world champions for the very first time. »
Canada is third in the Davis Cup rankings, while Hungary is 22nd. This will be the first clash between the two countries.
The composition of the teams will be announced in the weeks preceding the competition.
