The Sunday December 15, 2024on his Manécierie landthe RCCH (Rugby Club Cherbourg) came out on top against a valiant team from Alençon (Orne), at the end of a match where they did not really scare each other, without controlling the debates (22-6 ).
At home, in front more than a hundred spectatorsthe Cherbourg residents were keen to take their revenge. At the start of the season, they offered a victory to Alençon, the only one of the season for the Orne club.
A complicated start to the match
The first twenty minutes were complicated. The Alençon XV was well in place, and Cherbourg was unable to break the lines. In defense, the Cotentinois conceded two penalties in quick succession, converted by the Alençon scorer (0-6, 14e).
At the same time, Cherbourg shooter Cédric Guérin misses twice against the posts, with the wind in his face. The RCCH commits errors in attack which do not allow you to set the rhythm or impose your game.
It was a very tight defense, they tackled hard. We got into their game a little too much, wanting to break down a wall when we should have pushed aside.
Two very solid defenses
It was not until the twentieth minute that after a scrum at 22 meters, the Alençonnais pack finally gave in, pressed by the local forwards. The action is realized by the try of Ianis Chaminadas. Guérin does not transform, but the dynamic changes (5-6, 20e).
Cherbourg puts a little more speed and pushes the Ornais to make mistakes in defense. On a tackle without a ball, an Alençon player takes a white card, and concedes a penalty, transformed by Guérin (8-6). The RCCH passes in front, and is in numerical superiority.
But due to good defense from their opponents and personal errors, several forward in particular, Michel Desmidt’s players failed to use this advantage until a final action, just before the break.
Starting from their 22 meters, they carry the ball over several sequences of play. After a well-controlled ruck in the Alençon 22, to the left of the posts, they spread well, and n°12 Quentin de Chivre scores on the opposite side (13-6, 40e).
At the break, Cherbourg is ahead, but not safe from Alençonnais who are not very dangerous in attack, but who break up the game of the rather messy locals.
The start of the second half resembled the first half, in terms of fighting.
The RCCH was patient
Cherbourg is under pressure with several balls to defend in its 22 meters. And the RCCH players show great qualities, each time getting out of dangerous situations, by blocking a ball or provoking an opposing attack. After a kick from Alençon, they carry the ball for around fifty meters, finally gaining speed.
Unfortunately, when it was time to flatten out, an unfortunate forward attack prevented them from igniting the match for good. On the other side, the Ornais commit more and more inaccuracies in defense, offering penalties, on which Cherbourg will seek the three points each time, while they only needed one try to obtain the offensive bonus.
We leave this decision to the men on the ground. If they need or want to reassure themselves by taking three points, that’s their choice.
Thanks to two kicks in 6 minutes of Guerinthe Cherbourg residents protect themselves from an adverse return (19-6, 60e). The battle between the forwards resumes, sometimes going beyond the rules of the oval, when Nino Marie and the number 4 from Alençon clash. To calm things down, the referee sends them both to the bench, with a yellow card each.
The end of the match is still difficult, with two tenacious, very defensive teams. A final penalty in front of the goal marked by Pablo Abbezzot (22-6, 75e) comes to seal the score.
The RCCH takes its revenge against Alençon, and hopes to also take one against the ROC of Flamanville, January 19after the truce.
