Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat of the season in the league against Mainz 05 on Saturday. A big blow for coach Vincent Kompany, who also received bad news regarding a transfer.
Bayern Munich will therefore not get an additional attacker. For the moment, Der Rekordmeister is having a good first part of the season under the leadership of Kompany. In the Champions League, the team lost to Aston Villa and FC Barcelona, but they rectified the situation by winning the other four matches. To maintain these good results, the club wants to extend the contracts of several key players.
Players like Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané, Manuel Neuer, … have entered their last year of contract. In addition, reinforcements are also likely to follow during the next transfer window.
No understudy for Kane
Thus, Kompany would have set his sights on an additional attacker. Certainly, Harry Kane remains Bayern’s spearhead, but in recent weeks, the Englishman has been sidelined. And there is no other attacker with a similar profile in the current core. Still, Kane is said to be close to a comeback. Maybe even next week against RB Leipzig.
But as Bayern want to be competitive on several fronts even after the new year, an understudy for the top scorer does not seem to be a luxury.
Financial reasons
But we won’t get there. Indeed, sporting director Max Eberl made it clear on Saturday that Bayern would not recruit a new striker in January.
“We will not recruit a replacement for Kane in January. We can present excellent financial figures. But that comes from the fact that we always think economically,” Eberl said.
