Formula 1: why does Rwanda want to host a Grand Prix?

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, announced this Friday, December 13 in Kigali, his country’s candidacy for the organization of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. In addition to the sporting aspect, other reasons could justify the interest of the country to organize this type of event.

“I am happy to officially announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring back the thrill of motor racing to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix,” Mr Kagame said at the general assembly of the International Federation Motorsport (FIA), work on which began on December 10 in the Rwandan capital. On this occasion, the general director of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, had previously indicated that Rwanda has shown its willingness to host a race on a circuit which has not yet been built, recalling the holding of a meeting in September last, with Rwandan officials to study the project.

Several reasons can explain the country’s interest in wanting to organize an Grand Prix. Indeed, an event of this scale could attract significant international attention, but also promote tourism and stimulate the local economy. It could also strengthen Rwanda’s image as a tourist destination. Not to mention that the Rwandan government sees this as an opportunity to show the country’s progress since the tragic events of the 1990s and demonstrate its potential as a modern and dynamic country. Enough to encourage foreign investments and create local jobs, according to the Rwandan authorities.

If this project comes to fruition, F1 would return to Africa for the first time since 1993, the last GP on the continent having taken place in South Africa on the Kyalami circuit. It must be said that Rwanda, with its 13 million inhabitants, is investing massively in sport in recent years. Investments which notably include partnerships with football clubs (Arsenal, -SG), having displayed “Visit Rwanda” on their jerseys, as well as the organization of the World Road Championships in 2025.
