World Juniors: Canadian hopeful Rasmus Bergvist invited by Sweden

Sweden unveiled its roster for the next World Junior Hockey Championship on Wednesday, which notably includes Montreal Canadian prospect Rasmus Bergvist.

7th round selection of the Habs in the last draft, 224th overall, Rasmus Bergvist is playing this season with the Swedish club Skelleftea AIK. In 21 games, he has one assist and has a minus-4 rating.

The Swedish team, which has 14 forwards, 7 defensemen and three goalkeepers, will count on the return of nine players who won the silver medal last January.

Among them, Axel Sandin Pellikka, selected 17th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2023, will be making his third appearance in the tournament. The 19-year-old defenseman collected two goals and six points with Sweden, which lost in the final to the United States on its ice last January.

Tom Willander, selected 11th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2023, is also back on defense and is joined by two seventh-round picks: Axel Hurtig, a Calgary Flames prospect (selected in 2023), and Rasmus Bergqvist, prospect of the Montreal Canadiens, 224th overall pick in the last draft.

In addition to returning experienced players, the forward group includes Victor Eklund, an upcoming NHL draft-eligible prospect who was ranked 11th in Director of Scouting Craig Button’s most recent rankings. at TSN. Sweden will begin its 2025 world championship on December 26 against Slovakia. The team will also face Kazakhstan, Switzerland and the Czech Republic in Group B of the tournament presented in Ottawa.
