Flights in checked baggage: Air Transat hires security companies at Cancun airport

The airline Air Transat has hired companies specializing in security to supervise its operations in Mexican airports, including Cancun, where several Quebec travelers recently reported being victims of theft from their luggage.

This initiative aims to “enhance the security” of the airline’s operations in Mexico. “[…] it will allow increased surveillance and better prevention of these unfortunate incidents,” indicated Air Transat spokesperson Marie-Christine Pouliot.

However, it was not possible to know when these security agents would take up their duties.

Mme Pouliot also confirmed that this recent hiring had been planned “for several months”.

SATURDAY, The Journal reported the testimonies of several travelers who claimed to have had their branded sunglasses, perfumes and jewelry stolen during their stay at Cancun airport.

In most of the cases recorded, the robbed vacationers were traveling with Air Transat.

According to them, the thefts of which they were victims occurred during the boarding or disembarkation of baggage checked in the hold of the aircraft.

Only one traveler told us that his suitcase had been stolen while passing through the Puerto Vallarta airport, while traveling with Air Canada.

Furthermore, Brandon Saint-Jacques, from Saguenay, who also claimed to have had a pair of Versace brand glasses stolen from his suitcase checked in Cancún, was finally reimbursed by Air Transat on Tuesday.

What’s more, since the publication of our report, around ten other travelers have contacted us, recounting similar stories, always at the Cancun airport.

A sandal that doesn’t belong to him

This is the case, among others, of Chantal Pelletier, originally from the Laurentians, who noticed that her Ray-Ban brand sunglasses had disappeared from her suitcase when she returned from Cancún on September 8.

She even found a sandal there that wasn’t hers.

“This flip-flop doesn’t belong to me, and they left the empty case in my suitcase,” she says.

No investigation

For its part, the airline Air Transat says it takes the situation “very seriously”.

For the moment, however, no investigation has been initiated by the carrier.

“Unfortunately, despite detailed checks, no definitive conclusions could be drawn so far,” explained Ms.me Pouliot.

“As soon as cases are reported to us, we follow up rigorously with the Cancun Airport Security Agency and we have shared these incidents with airport management […] verifications were also requested at departure airports in Canada for each reported incident,” she added.

The airline also reminds passengers to remove all valuables from their checked baggage to reduce risks.
