Born on September 10, 2000 in Pisa, the hooker played until now at Benetton Treviso, where he played 49 matches and scored 18 tries. Selected for the first time with the Azzurri on October 24, 2019 in Ireland at just 19 years old, he now has 22 caps (including 10 as a starter).

Targeted by the RCT and its sporting director Laurent Emmanuelli for many weeks, this transfer validates a new recruitment policy. We are pleased to welcome Gianmarco to Toulon, details Laurent Emmanuelli in a club press release. His skills and potential are considerable. His profile will complement that of the players who will share the hooker position with him. He is a determined and ambitious player, who is keen to take up the challenge that is offered to him. We are eager to see him develop in our colours.

Three incumbents in the position

With the recruitment of Gianmarco Lucchesi, the RCT now has its three hookers, namely Teddy Baubigny, last season’s captain, Mickaël Ivaldi, the local boy, and now the Italian international. The group will also be able to rely on the young Pierre Damond who validated his first match sheet with the pros last season in La Rochelle.

Rather struggling in this position last season, notably with the departure of Christopher Tolofua in the middle of the season to Montpellier (combined with the loan of Yanis Boulassel to Béziers, in Pro D2), Toulon decided to arm themselves. And for that, this trio seems, at first glance, to offer certain guarantees!
