LIVE: 17 riders escaped on the 4th stage of the Tour de France 2024

17 men managed to escape on the climb of Sestriere, during the 4th stage of the 2024 Tour de France.

The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2024 started this Tuesday, July 2 from the town of Pinerolo towards Valloire. A 1st high mountain stage that could give rise to major maneuvers on the leaders’ side!

This fourth stage of the 2024 Tour de France promises to be very exciting! Today’s programme includes no less than 3,600 metres of positive elevation gain in just 139.6 kilometres! Many points will be awarded in the race for the polka dot jersey, which should give some riders ideas, including the wearer of the white jersey with red polka dots, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility).

The big fight ahead of the intermediate sprint at Castel del Bosco!

It’s the Belgian Victor Campenaerts who is the first attacker of the day from KM 0, followed in his attempt by Wout van Aert ! The two men, however, were unable to escape, as the peloton was vigilant. Many riders, such as Maxim Van Gils or Biniam Girmaytry their luck in vain. The good move is to be put to the initiative of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) which aims to get the points of the intermediate sprint located at Castle of the WoodsThe Dane slipped away from the peloton alone before being joined a few moments later by Wout Poels, Kevin Enjoys (Groupama-FDJ), Frank Van den Broek (DSM-firmenich PostNL), Harold Tejada (Astana, Qatar) et Magnus Cort Nielsen (Uno-X Mobility).

At the back is the formation Alpecin-Deceuninck of Jasper Philipsen who is pushing hard at the head of the peloton to get back on the breakaways and play the intermediate sprint. At the cost of a big effort, the peloton reforms less than 2 kilometers from Castle of the Woods while in the back boys such as Lenny Martinez or Axel Laurance are already in trouble! It’s finally Mads Pedersen who wins the intermediate sprint in front Biniam Girmay et Bryan Coquard, Jasper Philipsen taking only 4th place.

The good move comes out with Romain Grégoire, David Gaudu and Bruno Armirail!

It is Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny) who sounds the charge again just after the intermediate sprint. But the Belgian being well placed in the general classification, the peloton does not let him go. The attacks follow one another without really taking off. At the back, many riders seem to be in difficulty like Wout van Aert or trapped by the movements of the race, this is the case ofEgan Bernal or Primoz Roglic who find themselves momentarily in a second peloton before everything returns to normal.

It was finally a group of 17 men who managed to take off in the ascent of Sestrières among which we find: Alexey Lutsenko (Astana, Qatar), Oier Lazkano (Movistar), Christopher Juul-Jensen (Jayco AlUla), Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility), Romain Gregory (Groupama-FDJ), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Raul Garcia Pierna (Arkea-B&B Hotels), Warren Barguil (DSM-firmenich PostNL), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Julien Bernard (Lidl-Trek), Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech), Kobe Goossens (Intermarche-Wanty), Odd Christian Eiking (Uno-X Mobility) et Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies).
