For the moment, CH would have the 20th choice (that of the Panthers)

Remember the trade that brought Sean Monahan to Montreal in 2022?

Actually, let me ask that question again.

Remember how complicated the trade was to understand because of the conditional first-round pick that was sent to Montreal with Monahan? That said, we need to talk about it today.

Basically, the Canadian did not have the option of having the Flames’ choice in 2024.

The Flames would have had to choose between 1st and 11th position for this to be the case. Finally, the Flames spoke at 16th and they chose Samuel Honzek with their pick.

But since the choice of the Flames and that of the Panthers did not PAS is in the top 10 in the 2024 draftthis means that the CH will receive the highest ranked choice between the 1st round choice of the Panthers and the Flames this season (in 2025).

We agree that it’s more the Flames’ choice that we should be targeting here because the Panthers are solid… But at the same time, the Flames are having a great start to the season.

As of this writing, the Flames are ranked 8th in the overall NHL standings. The Panthers are in 12th place in the standings.

So, if the draft took place tonight and everything remained intact… The Canadian would draft 4th overall (with his choice) and 20th overall, with the Panthers’ choice.

Is it set in stone?

Absolutely not.

The Flames have had a good start to the season, certainly… But it is not because a club is good in the first quarter of the season that it is good during the entire campaign.

Dustin Wolf may be super good right now, but there are still a lot of major holes in the Flames roster.

And in the long term, this is what can hurt:

All this to say that between now and the end of the season, we will have to follow the performance of the Flames… But also that of the Florida Panthers.

Because it would be ideal for the Canadian, to see one of these clubs collapse in order to have the best possible choice.

– It’s up to you to answer it.

– I agree.

– Well done.

– It’s deserved.
