Why is Richard Carapaz, tied with three other riders, wearing the yellow jersey?

At the end of the 3rd stage of the 2024 Tour de France, won by Eritrean Biniam Girmay, Richard Carapaz took the leader’s yellow jersey on Monday, which was held by Tadej Pogacar.

There are four of them at the same time. At the end of the 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2024, the yellow jersey has changed shoulders again, passing from those of Tadej Pogacar to those of Richard Carapaz. While the Eritrean Biniam Girmay won the sprint, this Monday, in Turin (Italy), the Ecuadorian took the lead of the general classification and the leader’s jersey, after finishing in 14th place.

The reigning Olympic champion, winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2019, is nevertheless tied with three other riders (15h20’18”): the double Danish title holder Jonas Vingegaard, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel and the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. But in the event of a tie, the rules of the Grande Boucle stipulate that the riders are separated by the addition of their place at the finish of each stage.

In this little game, it is Richard Carapaz who comes out on top with a 10th, a 22nd and a 14th place ahead of Tadej Pogacar (4th, 14th, 38th), Remco Evenepoel (8th, 12th, 40th) and Jonas Vingegaard (16th, 13th, 68) and Richard Carapaz (22nd and 10th).

But this ranking could change and this 111th edition could have a 4th leader in four days at the end of the 4th stage, this Tuesday, marked by the arrival in France. And especially by the Galibier pass to climb and which could serve as a judge of peace to seize the yellow jersey.
