Under the Cadillac flag, General Motors has landed a place on the Formula 1 grid from the 2026 season.
After a few days of rumors, it’s now official. Formula 1 has just announced that General Motors, under the Cadillac flag, has “reached an agreement in principle to bring an eleventh team onto the grid from 2026”. Michael Andretti, the son of Mario Andretti, F1 world champion in 1978, had been trying to get a place on the F1 grid for several years. But it was finally after his exit from the project that things changed. During the summer, Dan Towriss, owner of 1001 Group which manages nearly 40 billion in assets, took full control of the project while Andretti left the structure.
The press release states that “throughout the year, they (Cadillac/General Motors) have taken several operational steps and clearly shown their involvement so that the eleventh team is named around GM/Cadillac and that GM eventually becomes an engine supplier. » The question of the engine still remains unanswered. The end of the Alpine program means that Renault will no longer exist and that Mercedes will be at maximum capacity. General Motors may have to team up with Ferrari.
