A former referee gives his opinion on the contentious phases of Anderlecht – Ghent

The match between Anderlecht and La Gantoise (6-0) gave rise to many discussions. After the match, Wouter Vrancken said the referee had decided the result.

As a reminder, Ghent finished the match with nine men after the exclusions of Jordan Tonuranigha and Matisse Samoise. The former received a second yellow card just before half-time while the latter received a red card after an intervention by the VAR.

Coosemans

For his part, Ghent believes that Anderlecht should also have received a red card after Colin Coosemans’ foul on Max Dean. After losing the ball, the Anderlecht goalkeeper grabbed the Ghent striker’s jersey but was not penalized.

Former referee Tim Pots explains in Het Laatste Nieuws that Coosemans did not deserve to be sent off: “Dean had his back to the goal and there was a defender capable of intervening behind him anyway.”

Two expulsions considered severe

Pots can, however, understand the anger of the people of Ghent regarding the two expulsions: “Toranugha should not have received a second yellow card at that moment. I think the referee remembered that he could have given him a second yellow shortly before then you start to overcompensate.”

“As for Samoisse, I find his expulsion exaggerated. His gesture was not excessive, nor did he push him in the face.”
