“First: We restarted the discussion on this topic two years ago. Just after the “Qatar 2022” World Cup, we organized a ceremony in Casablanca to encourage national media talents who covered this continental event, highlighting the need to overcome the obstacles observed during this global event.
Second: In June 2022, we held a meeting with representatives of associations at the headquarters of the National Press Council, on their initiative, to look for ways to unify the interlocutor on all issues related to the sports press with the competent authorities, in order to overcome the fragmentation and chaos experienced by the sector, and try to respond to the negative aspects observed during the World Cup in Qatar.
Third: Subsequently, the idea of discussing sector reform from an academic and cognitive perspective emerged. A joint committee was formed between the Higher Institute of the Press, the National Union of the Moroccan Press and representatives of associations to prepare the first National Forum on the Sports Press, which was held at the Higher Institute of la Presse on December 23, 2023, under the theme “The challenges of national sports media by 2030”.
Fourth: After the acceleration of events linked to the African Cup in Abidjan and the Olympic Games, meetings took place without the participation of the Moroccan National Press Union, in particular that between the associations and the president of the Royal Federation Moroccan Football in December 2023. We felt that any consensual initiative from the sector would be welcome, the main thing for us being to initiate the necessary reforms for the sector and our country.
