Former Irish rugby international Brendan Mullin was sentenced Monday by Irish courts to three years in prison for embezzling more than 500,000 euros from the Bank of Ireland, his employer at the time of the events. Prosecuted on fourteen charges, he was found guilty of twelve of them, including embezzlement, at the beginning of November by a jury at the Dublin Criminal Court.
The events took place between 2011 and 2013 when he was general director of the bank. According to the court, he embezzled more than 500,000 euros using false invoices.
No justification
Judge Martin Nolan stressed that the ex-sportsman had not provided any justification to explain his actions. However, he said he took into account that the bank had been fully reimbursed and that Mullin had shown remorse. The latter had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Brendan Mullin, 61, who played as a center three-quarter, has 55 caps with the Irish team, between 1984 and 1995. He participated in three World Cups (1987, 1991 and 1995).
