Wimbledon: superb debut for Denis Shapovalov, who overthrows a top seed

Was Denis Shapovalov looking forward to celebrating Canada Day? The Ontarian wasted no time reaching the second round at Wimbledon on Monday, toppling the 19e seeded, Chilean Nicolas Jarry.

“Shapo” won 6-1, 7-5 and 6-4 in 1 hour 54 minutes, in a performance that is reminiscent of some of his past exploits on this famous grass, where he notably reached the semi-final three years ago.

Because despite his Latin origins, Jarry is not only a aficionados clay.

A player with great power – a major asset on grass – the recent finalist in Rome reached the third round at the All England Club last year, where he was defeated by the eventual champion, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

In full control

But Shapovalov also knows how to do it in the most famous venue in tennis. Especially when the 25-year-old masters these emotions which sometimes play tricks on him.

And he did it well, Monday, in this surgical match where the rankings – the Canadian, who saw his fall due to an injury, are currently 121e – sometimes seemed to be reversed.

“Shapo” will now face the winner of the confrontation between the German Daniel Altmaier, 80eand the British Arthur Fery, 247e.

More details to come.
