F1i Drivers’ Notes

F1i distributes its traditional ratings to the 20 drivers entered in the 2024 Formula 1 world championship following their performance in Austria.

LANDO NORRIS – 8/10

It is difficult to judge Norris’ weekend in Austria after he failed to finish due to the collision with Verstappen. Regretting his naivety in the sprint, he probably tried to make up for it in the grand prix. He will learn his lesson.

LOGAN SARGEANT – 5,5/10

Sargeant beat team-mate Albon in sprint qualifying, but that was his only victory of the weekend.

FERNANDO ALONSO – 5.5/10

Alonso is unrecognizable in this 2024 season, after having had another disjointed weekend in Austria. He also received a 10-second penalty for his collision with Zhou, a rare error for the double world champion.

GUANYU ZHOU – 6/10

Zhou was behind his teammate Bottas all weekend in Austria.

VALTERY BOTTAS – 6.5/10

Sauber continues to be the slowest team in the F1 field, but Bottas still had the upper hand over his Chinese teammate. That’s all he can do at the moment.

ALEX ALBON – 6.5/10

Williams lacked pace in Austria, and Albon was beaten by teammate Sargeant in sprint qualifying. Logic was, however, reestablished during the classic qualifying phase.

YUKI TSUNODA – 6/10

A bad weekend overall for Tsunoda, who received a heavy fine of 40,000 euros (half of which was suspended) for using bad words on the radio.

LANCE STROLL – 6/10

Aston Martin’s pace was absolutely not good in Austria, which contributed to Stroll’s elimination in Q1. He has never been in contention for a top 10 during the Grand Prix.

ESTEBAN OCON – 7/10

Ocon seemed to have the advantage over Gasly this weekend, but during the Sunday race, it was ultimately the other Alpine which took the upper hand.

CHARLES LECLERC – 6/10

Another horrible weekend for Leclerc. An anti-stall problem put him out of the race in the sprint, while he suffered damage to his car on the first lap of the race, completely ruining his Grand Prix.

PIERRE GASLY – 7.5/10

While it seemed that Ocon had the upper hand in the fast lap exercise, Gasly took over once race day arrived. The two men battled hard on track but it was Gasly who ultimately came out on top.

DANIEL RICCIARDO – 8/10

A good weekend without a hitch for Ricciardo. Convincingly ahead of his team-mate Tsunoda, he leaves Spielberg with the two points for ninth place.

KEVIN MAGNUSSEN – 8/10

Like Hulkenberg, Magnussen was impressive in Austria. His performance in the Sprint was particularly impressive.

SERGIO PEREZ – 5.5/10

The races are all the same for Perez, with another disappointing, if not mediocre, weekend in Austria, on the home turf of the Red Bull team. Even though his chances of a good result in the race were compromised by his contact with Leclerc at the start, Perez has never been a threat to the leading teams in Austria.

NICO HÜLKENBERG – 9,5/10

A sensational weekend from Hülkenberg. Qualifying regularly in Q3, he converted his good qualification into a brilliant sixth place at the finish, giving Haas its best result of the season.

MAX VERSTAPPEN – 6.5/10

While Verstappen had generally excelled in Austria in recent years, he was ultimately the cause of the accident with Norris and was appropriately given a 10-second penalty. He can count himself lucky to have managed to salvage the ten points for fifth place.

LEWIS HAMILTON – 7/10

The Red Bull Ring continues to be a circuit that does not smile on Hamilton, and that proved to be the case again this year.

CARLOS SAINZ – 8.5/10

Given that Ferrari had the fourth fastest car in Austria, Sainz performed well throughout the weekend to score solid points.

OSCAR PIASTRI – 7.5/10

Piastri will be disappointed not to have made the most of the collision between Verstappen and Norris. In absolute terms, his second place finish is not a bad result considering he started from the fourth row on the grid. His pace at the end of the race was impressive.

GEORGE RUSSELL – 9/10

While Russell took Mercedes’ first Formula 1 win since 2022 by benefiting greatly from the luck factor, it must also be acknowledged that he had been having a great weekend so far. He was there to capitalise when the opportunity arose, securing the second win of his F1 career.
