Basketball, NBA – Chris Paul to join Victor Wembanyama at the San Antonio Spurs for one season

Veteran point guard Chris Paul will leave the Golden State Warriors to join the San Antonio Spurs of phenomenon Victor Wembanyama, several media announced on Sunday. At 39 years old, Chris Paul agreed with the Spurs for a one-year contract worth 11 million dollars (around 10.23 million euros), write in particular Bleacher Report et ESPN.

The Golden State Warriors, where Paul signed last summer, announced that they had released the player earlier today, which marks the start of free agency, an official period for certain negotiations and transfers. Chris Paul, who will begin his 20th NBA season in the fall, will play for a 7th team after New Orleans, the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston, Oklahoma City, Phoenix and Golden State, with whom he was eliminated in the play-offs in spring.

Finally a leader for Wemby

Having undergone surgery on his left hand after suffering a fracture in early January, he missed nearly two months of competition. The 3rd best passer in the history of the league (11,894 passes), never titled in the NBA, will put his experience to the service of a very young team. Above all, the association of this excellent passer with Victor Wembanyama is mouth-watering, after a season where the French giant (2.24 m) sometimes had trouble being found in good conditions by his teammates.

The San Antonio Spurs, 14th (out of 15) in the Western Conference this season and therefore absent from the play-offs for the 5th consecutive year, are in the process of rebuilding around their French jewel, whom they had drafted in first position in 2023, and with whom they hope to return to the summits. The Texan franchise had already added a leader to its squad by selecting young American Stephon Castle (19) in 4th position in the draft on Wednesday.
