With this new contract, the Catalan will have spent more than ten years at the head of the team.
Guardiola’s journey at the helm of City has been punctuated with success. He has won 18 major trophies so far, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League.
By winning the Premier League last season, City became the first men’s team in English football history to win four consecutive top division titles.
During the previous campaign, Guardiola led City to a magnificent treble (Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup), which constituted the greatest season in our 130-year history.
Under his leadership, City also became the first team in Premier League history to take 100 points in a single season (2017/18) and the first team in English football to win all four domestic trophies (2018/19) .
His record is remarkable. In all competitions, he has won 353 of the 490 matches he has managed, giving him an exceptional winning percentage of 72%, with City having scored 1,200 goals during this period, an average of 2.45 per match .
Only Les McDowall – who managed 587 games between 1950 and 1963 – is ahead of Pep on the list of coaches who have managed the most matches in the club’s history.
It is now possible that Guardiola, who is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, will surpass McDowall’s tally before the end of next season, given our participation in this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States .
In light of the news, City president Khaldoon Al Mubarak praised Guardiola’s leadership and welcomed the manager’s decision to stay in Manchester for two more years.
“Like all City fans, I am delighted that Pep’s journey at Manchester City will continue, allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the football landscape. »
“His thirst for improvement and success remains insatiable and the direct beneficiaries will always be our players and staff, our club culture and English football as a whole. »
“This extension will allow Pep to go beyond a decade on the Manchester City bench and give him the opportunity to continue breaking records. »
Guardiola added: “Manchester City means a lot to me. »
“This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many extraordinary moments together. I feel something special for this club. »
“That’s why I’m very happy to stay for two more seasons. »
“Thank you everyone for continuing to trust and support me – the owner, the chairman Khaldoon, Ferran, Txiki, the players and of course the supporters… everyone connected to Manchester City. It has always been an honor, a pleasure and a privilege to be here. »
“I’ve said it many times before, but I have everything a coach needs, it’s a real pleasure. »
“I hope we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. This will be my goal. »
Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Pep and wish him the best for the rest of his career with the club.
