Standard is having a season beyond expectations with a provisional ninth place, just three points from the top 6. However, all is not rosy in Liège. In recent weeks, one player in particular has been the target of a lot of criticism.
Epolo’s repeated mistakes
Goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo made several notable errors. Against Sint-Truiden, he stood out for an avoidable loss of ball, fortunately canceled by the VAR which invalidated Bertaccini’s goal. But against La Gantoise, his mistakes were costly, with five goals conceded in the end.
These performances have intensified calls for Arnaud Bodart’s return to the cages. The experienced goalkeeper was sidelined at the end of last season with a view to a transfer which ultimately did not take place this summer. Standard then chose to bet on Epolo, but the young 19-year-old goalkeeper still seems to lack experience.
A lucid approach despite the pressure
Despite the criticism, Epolo remains calm. “I know myself when I have played badly, and the staff is there to tell me if it is good or not,” he confided to Sudpresse. “I am quite clear-minded about my performances. What people from the outside say is not always easy, but I try to ignore it and continue working. »
Criticism, part of the job
Epolo says he’s not too affected by the criticism. “Criticism is normal, and I have to accept it. Even Messi and Mbappé receive them, so why not me? I just have to keep doing my job. »
The international break allowed him to relieve some pressure. Called up as third goalkeeper with the Belgian Espoirs, he participated in the Euro play-offs lost to the Czech Republic. It now remains to be seen whether Epolo will be returned to the cages on Saturday, when Standard faces Cercle de Bruges.
