NHL awards ceremony: Nathan MacKinnon wins a 2nd trophy with the Hart

Named best player according to his peers earlier in the evening, Nathan MacKinnon concluded the NHL awards ceremony by winning the Hart Trophy on Thursday.

The 28-year-old was a finalist for the Hart for the fourth time after finishing second in the voting twice and third on another occasion.

He joins Peter Forsberg (2002-2003) and Joe Sakic (2000-2001) as the third player in Avalanche and Nordiques history to be crowned Most Valuable Player.

MacKinnon first won the Ted Lindsay Award for which he was competing against Nikita Kucherov (Lightning), who has already won the honor once, and Auston Matthews (Maple Leafs). Kucherov was also nominated for the Hart, along with Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers.

MacKinnon finished second in scoring with an organization-record 140 points (51 goals, 89 assists) in 82 games, behind Kucherov. His 51 goals placed him fourth in the NHL and his 48 power play points (10 goals, 38 assists) placed him second.

He became the sixth player in Avalanche and Nordiques history to have a 50-goal season, tying Peter Stastny (93 in 1981-82) for the most assists in a single campaign.

He also became the first person of all time to record two 19-game point streaks in the same season.
