Tour de France: here is the amount of bonuses awarded to riders during the competition

In cycling, the Tour de France begins Saturday in Florence, Italy. For the occasion, our journalist Serge Vermeiren looked at the bonuses that cyclists will receive.

While the Tour de France has not yet started and everything remains open on the sporting front, the riders already know the amounts of the victory bonuses. Serge Vermeiren was on the RTL info 19h set to provide more details.

He begins first by explaining what it is for the yellow jersey of the Tour. “Let’s take the example of last year with the Dane Jonas Vingegaard. He won 500,000 euros after winning the 2023 Tour de France for 21 stages, which is equivalent to 21 days of racing” he explains.

However, this is nothing compared to the Euro football championship, as Serge Vermeiren points out.Imagine, in 15 days, Kevin De Bruyne is European champion. Well, each player is reportedly set to get €445,000 for the entire tournament, after playing just 7 matches“.

But for the Tour de France, if the winner wins 500,000 euros, is it the same for second and third? Not quite. “200,000 euros for the second, 100,000 euros for the third. And if you are 20th or last in the round, you barely receive 1,000 euros. But to do this you have to cross the finish line and complete all the stages of the Tour de France“, adds our journalist.

You should also know that in addition to the final ranking, bonuses are awarded during each stage. “There are many of them. For example, if you arrive first at the top of a pass, you get a bonus. Of course, the most attractive bonus is the one for winning a stage. If you are the first to cross the finish line, you get a little over 11,000 euros. 5,500 euros for second and 2,800 euros for third.“, says Serge Vermeiren.

There are also daily bonuses, especially for the yellow jersey. Each day spent in yellow brings 500 euros. But is this money only for the rider or for his team?

At the end of the Tour, each team, all the teams will collect the bonuses. They will add it up and this sum will be shared with the entire collective, that is to say the riders, the sports directors, but also the mechanic, the bus driver and why not the administrative staff who may have stayed in the country“, concludes Serge Vermeiren.
