In the midst of war in the Middle East, Palestine won a draw against South Korea (1-1) on Tuesday during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Enough to impress Heung-Min Son.
It’s only a point, but in these turbulent times, the performance is almost a feat. While the conflict in the Middle East rages, Palestine managed to hold off South Korea (1-1) in Amman (Jordan) on Tuesday in the third round of the Asian zone qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
A result which leaves the Palestinians last in their group, but which earned them the congratulations of a world star: South Korean captain Heung-Min Son, author of the equalizer.
“We can learn from them”
“I would like to applaud them,” the Tottenham striker said after the match, according to comments reported by Reuters. “I think they were really well prepared despite such a difficult situation, and they executed their plan very well.”
Especially since Palestine, at the beginning of September, had already gone for a draw in South Korea (0-0). “We can learn from them,” Heung-Min Son continued. “But I’m disappointed we didn’t win and I hope we play better next year.”
Still leading the group of six teams after six days out of ten, South Korea remains in a good position to finish in the top two, and thus land a direct ticket to the World Cup. Palestine can still aim for third or fourth place and qualification for the fourth round of the qualifiers.
