Georgia pulled off a major feat by beating Portugal 2-0. The team’s qualification for the round of 16 is largely down to FC Metz striker Georges Mikautadze.

Facing a revamped Portugal team, the Georgians were effective from the start with a counter from Kvaratskhelia in the 2nd minute of play. Huddled in defense, the players were then able to count on their goalkeeper, Mamardashvili, author of 5 decisive saves. While the Portuguese could have come back on numerous occasions, it was ultimately “King George” who made the break from the penalty spot in the 57th minute. This is his third goal since the start of the competition, which makes him the top scorer in the Euro group stage.

Mikautadze in the spotlight

Author of a remarkable second part of the season for FC Metz with 14 goals in 22 matchesMikautadze continues to shine with his selection since he scored a goal in each match of the Euro. After scoring in the opening match against Turkey, the center forward did it again against the Czech Republic, which allowed his team to get the point of the draw. Forced to win last night against Portugal, the Metz player was decisive on both of his team’s goals since it was he who launched Kvaratskhelia on the first goal before scoring the second on penalty.

Although his departure from Metz is already a done deal, Mikautadze’s performances at the Euro could raise the stakes. Several Ligue 1 clubs are competing for the deal: AS Monaco, Rennes, Lyon and Lens. His exposure to the Euro could push Metz to ask for more than the 20 million planned for the player.

Mikautadze, who will face Spain in the round of 16, should make his choice regarding his future after the competition. Although it has been announced on the Monaco side, the discussions have not progressed and the player could turn to another club. Still unknown to the general public, his Euro has projected him onto the European scene, which could also attract new suitors to the case. For its part, Metz is rubbing its hands, the club is certainly preparing to make the biggest sale in the club’s history.
