With the book ‘Behind the scenes of Sporting Anderlecht’, Brussels fans have a unique insight into the functioning of the most successful club in Belgium. The life story of Hubert Lemaire, the legendary physical trainer of the Mauve et Blanc, is there. highlighted.

From May 2002 to May 2024, Lemaire was on the training pitch alongside players like Vincent Kompany, Youri Tielemans and Romelu Lukaku. It is especially the latter who openly testifies to the influence of the 64-year-old coach on his career.

Romelu Lukaku vividly remembers his first meeting with Lemaire. In 2006, during a training course in Hoogstraten, the thirteen-year-old Lukaku learned the importance of running technique. “Mr Hubert changed the way I ran and thus laid the foundations for my explosiveness,” he says in the foreword to the book. “With my size and muscle mass, I would never have developed the same speed and endurance without his support.”

Hubert Lemaire changed Lukaku’s career

The Napoli striker still respects Lemaire’s unique approach. “He taught me to never give up,” Lukaku says. “Even during the famous laps around the Neerpede pond, he knew how to motivate with his positive attitude. He was strict but fair, always giving the impression that he was looking for the best for you.”

In addition to physical support, Lemaire also offered mental support. “As a young player, I was often unsure,” admits Lukaku. “Other players could be tough, but Monsieur Hubert had a listening ear. He gave me confidence and helped me with targeted exercises, even when I had back problems at a young age.”

Today, Lukaku still feels the impact of Lemaire’s work. “When I am in Belgium, I still run around the Neerpede pond. The memories of these training sessions continue to inspire me,” he continues. With pride, he sees his son Romeo taking his first steps with the RSCA youth team.

Lukaku looks to the future with optimism, thanks in part to the legacy of his former mentor. “Mr. Hubert is not only a fantastic coach, but also a role model for future generations. This book is a must-read for those who want to understand how Sporting Anderlecht lays the foundations for great careers.”
