After a convincing victory for Senegal against Burundi (3-0) during their last meeting of the CAN 2025 qualifiers, Pape Thiaw, interim coach of the Lions of Téranga, bid farewell to his temporary role with an impressive record. During the post-match press conference, the Senegalese technician praised the performance of his players while adopting a measured stance regarding his future at the head of the national team.

Appointed in September to succeed Aliou Cissé, Pape Thiaw led the Lions brilliantly: four victories in four matches, no defeats, no goals conceded, and a resounding qualification for CAN 2025. “The players respected the instructions, they wanted to please the public and ended the year well,” he said, highlighting the excellent collective dynamic of his group.

The match against Burundi once again demonstrated the strength of the team, notably driven by Habib Diarra, who scored twice. However, Pape Thiaw remains lucid: “Everything is not perfect, there are things to correct. »

A decision in the hands of the FSF

Asked about his future, Thiaw preferred to play the card of caution. “The interim period ends today. I let the Federation decide,” he said. A declaration which returns the responsibility to the Senegalese Federation (FSF), the only one authorized to decide whether the former Senegalese international will continue to guide the Lions or if another technician will take his place.

Senegal, who finished at the top of Group L with 16 points, 10 goals scored and just one conceded, once again showed their dominance. This success reinforces expectations around the team, which will defend its title of 2022 African champion, during the next CAN in Morocco.
