Earlier in the day, Swiatek had brought Poland back to level terms by beating an eye-catching Paolini with difficulty (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). Facing the Italian, whom she had beaten in their three previous confrontations, Swiatek was fragile in her service games, conceding twice in the first set to finally lose it 6-3. In the second set, the world No. 4 had many break points but was unable to convert any of them. Quite the opposite of the Pole, who stole Tuscany’s throw-in at 5-4 in her favor to equalize at one set everywhere.
