247 – The head of European Union foreign policy, Josep Borrell, said this Monday (18) that the bloc’s foreign ministers have decided to continue providing military and financial support to Ukraine.
“Today, after hours of discussions with my colleagues, the foreign ministers of the Member States, and tomorrow with the defense ministers, we decided that our support for Ukraine must continue. From military support to financial support, including sanctions [contra a Rússia]”, said Borrell, adding that it is time for Europe to “step up” its actions and “assume its strategic responsibilities” towards Ukraine.
Russia has been conducting its special military operation in Ukraine since February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the aim of the operation is to protect people subjected to what he called genocide by the Kiev regime for years. In response, the West and its allies tightened sanctions against Russia and began supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Not Sunday, or The New York Times reported, citing unnamed representatives of the US administration, that Biden authorized Ukraine for the first time to use US-made long-range missiles to attack Russian territory. According to the sources, the first deep attacks on Russian territory will likely be carried out with ATACMS missiles. The newspaper Le Figaro stated that France and the United Kingdom also authorized Ukraine to use its long-range weapons to attack Russian territory.
“I continue to believe that this is what should be done [a Ucrânia usar armas para ataques de longo alcance em profundidade na Rússia]and I’m sure we will discuss this repeatedly… I have said, repeatedly, that Ukraine must be able to use the weapons that we have supplied to them,” Borrell declared before the ministerial meeting in Brussels.
The Ministry [da Defesa russo] stated that if the Ukrainian capital is allowed to strike deep into Russian territory with long-range missiles, this will radically change the essence of the conflict in Ukraine and will represent the direct involvement of the United States and its allies in hostilities against Russia (with Sputnik ).
