The big slump for Quebec goalkeepers continues in the National Hockey League (NHL), with Devon Levi failing to convince the Sabers staff to keep him in Buffalo after a difficult start to the season.

Considered in his early days as the organization’s goalkeeper of the future and a real beacon of hope for La Belle Province, the native of Dollard-des-Ormeaux instead shuttles between the Bettman circuit and the American League.

A college prodigy, Levi came to Buffalo at the end of the 2022-2023 season. He quickly stood out, with five victories in seven starts, but the magic did not last.

The one who will turn 23 in a little over a month must rebuild his skills in the American League. The Sabers traded him to the Rochester Americans on Monday, which means that Marc-André Fleury and Samuel Montembeault are currently the only two Quebec goalies in the NHL.

Levi is no better than a 2-5 record, an .870 save percentage and a 3.95 goals-against average this season. Proof that nothing is going well, he gave up twice in four shots a week ago against the Montreal Canadiens after taking over from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

“We have to give him a few games so that he plays, it’s the best option for him,” head coach Lindy Ruff explained at a press conference. Simple as that, he has to play. […] It’s not easy for a young goalkeeper, because you have to find a certain rhythm.”

“No one likes to be demoted, but they also want to play,” added the experienced driver. He said it was the first time he had experienced this over a long period of time. He is a very competitive young man. You observe his workouts; he gives 100% every time.”

In 2023-2024, a stay in Rochester galvanized Levi, who returned in force in March after two months in the minors. Veteran James Reimer will take his position with the Sabres.

Still, this is nothing very encouraging for Quebec goalkeepers. Montembeault is going through all kinds of ups and downs, and Fleury has only played four times this season. Behind the excellent Filip Gustavsson with the Minnesota Wild, he patiently awaits his next start, the 1000e of his career.
