In UEFA’s sights, they did not escape a heavy sanction. The Albanians, who play their place at Euro 2024 this Monday, will be without their striker Mirlind Daku for two matches. The latter was suspended for having “violated the basic rules of good conduct”having used “a sporting event for an event of a non-sporting nature” et “for bringing football into disrepute”, details the instance. At the end of the match against Croatia (2-2) on June 19 in Hamburg, he uttered nationalist anti-Serbia and anti-North Macedonia chants using a megaphone.

An investigation still ongoing

Mirlind Daku, who has since apologized on her Instagram account, will therefore miss the match against Spain this Monday and a possible round of 16. In the event of non-qualification, he would be absent from Albania’s next Nations League match in the fall. The Rubin Kazan player played with the Kosovo selection until last year. The investigation into potential racist or discriminatory behavior during the match against Croatia is still ongoing, specifies UEFA. In the 59th minute of play, both sides sang “Kill, kill, Serb” (“Kill, kill the Serbs”). The president of the Serbian Federation then called for sanctions, even threatening to leave the tournament if nothing was done.

UEFA has so far imposed a fine of 47,500 euros on the Albanian Federation for “the use of pyrotechnic devices” (2500 euros), “the invasion of the hairy girl” (20,000 euros) and for “provocative messages that are not appropriate in a sporting event” (25,000 euros). The Croatian Federation will have to pay a fine of 27,500 euros for the use (10,500 euros) and throwing of pyrotechnic devices (17,500 euros).

Asked at a press conference on Sunday, the Albania captain refused to react to the suspension of his teammate.
