The election of Donald Trump will not have an impact on the preparation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, the organizers assured Thursday, estimating that “the Games are not political”.
“The Olympic Games are not political (…) They are America’s Games which take place in Los Angeles. They place themselves above politics in all its aspects”said LA28 President Casey Wasserman during a press conference held Thursday afternoon on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where the Olympic and Paralympic Village will be located in 2028.
“We have been working on this for ten years (since the start of the application process, before the award in 2017, editor’s note), we have had three presidents and this will be the fourth administration. Trump was president when we won the Games and he signed the documents that bind the federal government on security and transportation.added Mr. Wasserman.
The press conference concluded three days of meetings and facility tours between the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the LA28 Organizing Committee and that of the Paris Games held this summer in the French capital.
“We have been in contact with the transition team”Reynold Hoover, executive director of the Los Angeles Games, told AFP.
“Casey (Wasserman) and I wrote a letter to President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his election. We are engaged today not only with the incoming Trump administration, but also with our partners at the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security and all the federal partners we need to organize the Games.he added.
“Our Games are apolitical. We are going to organize the biggest Games in history, with the greatest revenue ever and we are going to do it in partnership with the State of California, with the city, with the community and with the country. »
