As of this writing, the Canadian is having a terrible start to the season and currently finds himself 32nd and last in the overall NHL standings with a 5-9-2 record, good for 12 points in 16 games.
So much so that most of the team’s supporters, who still dreamed of being “in the mix” for participation in the playoffs just over two weeks ago, have now changed their tune and are now dreaming of an advantageous place in the lottery for the next draft.
That’s what 10 losses in 13 games tends to do, generally.
Besides, you shouldn’t expect to see the DG Kent Hughes do anything drastic in the near future, he who emerged from the shadows yesterday to affirm that he was going to be patient and had no intention of sacrificing his future to correct the present .
But if the Canadian continues to get bogged down and ends his season at the bottom of the overall NHL rankings, there is reason to be excited for the draft crop that is coming.
If most experts only care about the center James Hagensthe choice of the vast majority to be selected first overall, the analyst Simon “Le Snake” Boisvertwho is never afraid to go against the grain, instead has another name in his sights.
The offensive defender Matthew Schaefer.
Him whom he does not hesitate to compare to a young person Kale Makar would become, according to him, the future number one defenseman of the Canadian and would even bring the team to great honors in his opinion. Here’s what he had to say about it on the most recent podcast Process.
Matthew Schaefer is coming to Montreal. The guy to go for, but no one is going to have the guts to do it like no one had the guts to go for Cale Makar in 2017, it’s Matthew Schaefer.
I say that the player to get for Montreal and that guarantees a Stanley Cup within the next 6 years is Matthew Schaefer.
-Simon Boisvert
We can never blame the Snake not to get wet, making quite a statement here.
He who appears in the Top-3 of the vast majority of expert lists, Schaefer certainly seems the best available defender of the 2025 vintage. Could he beat the center James Hagens or the big winger Porter Martone by next June? The race promises to be extremely interesting.
- Aged 17, Matthew Schaefer is a 6’1″/162lbs left-handed defenseman. So far this season, he has compiled a record of 3 goals and 7 assists for a total of 10 points in 8 games with the Erie Otters in the OHL.
Could the Canadian once again select a defenseman in the first round in the next draft?
