This is one of the little stories of a competition. Asked at a press conference, Czech striker Mojmir Chytil proclaimed his love for Lionel Messi just before challenging Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

So are you more Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? It’s a question that has bothered all football fans for a good fifteen years. The two football monsters have constantly been put into competition, even more so when the Portuguese joined Real Madrid to come up against the Argentinian’s Barça. Everyone then had their preference. And this is the case of Mojmir Chytil, striker from the Czech Republic.

This name doesn’t mean much to you and there’s nothing wrong with that. The 25-year-old striker revealed himself in the country at Sigma Olomouc and signed in the summer of 2023 with Slavia Prague, one of the two big clubs in the country alongside Sparta. Author of a successful season with 13 goals scored in 29 league matches, Chytil also showed himself on the European scene with four goals scored as Slavia reached the knockout stages of the Europa League.

“I have always been pro-Messi”

Holder in three of the Czech Republic’s last four matches, with a double against Malta, the 25-year-old striker, six goals in fourteen caps, presented himself at a press conference on Saturday, and the guy was quiet to say the least before challenging Portugal in CR7: “I have always been pro-Messi”. Smiling and a bit provocative, Chytil then corrected himself: “But Ronaldo had an exceptional career, one of the best of all time. I’m really looking forward to this match and maybe we can give it a little bitter taste at the end.”.

This would mean achieving a blow against Portugal, who are favorites in this group F but also for the final victory. Like Chytil, the Czechs, who field the youngest team in the tournament with an average age of 25, are therefore moving forward without complexes and with ambition in this Euro and a clear desire to do to fall Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, which would be a real surprise.
