The Israeli National Security Council, under the Prime Minister’s Office, recommended that Israelis on Sunday avoid cultural and sporting events in Europe, following the violence in Amsterdam.
The Council “recommends that Israelis abroad act by taking precautions (…) particularly during the coming week, to completely avoid going to sporting events and cultural events in which Israelis participate, especially in next match of the Israel team in Paris.
The Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, announced on Sunday the mobilization of 4,000 police officers and gendarmes for the meeting scheduled for Thursday between France and Israel at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, a match which Emmanuel Macron should attend, according to the Élysée Palace and counting for the Football Nations League.
“We will not tolerate any excesses or disturbances to public order,” added Nuñez, specifying that checks before access to the stadium would be “extremely reinforced”.
Tensions rose in Amsterdam last Thursday after supporters of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team made racist and abusive insults against Arabs, tore down Palestinian flags and caused unrest in following their match against Ajax Amsterdam.
Jazie Veldhuyzen, Amsterdam city councilor, said on Saturday that “Maccabi hooligans attacked houses displaying Palestinian flags and targeted pro-Palestinian residents of Amsterdam. That’s when the violence broke out.”
