The new life of Alberth Elis, victim of serious head trauma with Bordeaux

Victim of severe head trauma at the start of 2024 and placed in an artificial coma for a few days, ex- striker Alberth Elis returned to his difficult return to reality in an interview for The Athletic.

Victim of serious cranial trauma on February 24 during a Ligue 2 match against Guingamp, Alberth Elis, the former striker of Girondins de Bordeaux looked back on his long convalescence in an interview for The Athletic. The Honduran international still hopes to be able to resume his professional career.

He explains in particular that he wanted to resume the thread of his career in Bordeaux, where everything stopped after being evacuated on a stretcher following a head collision with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis. Alberth Elis was transported to the Pellegrin University Hospital in Bordeaux and then operated on before being placed in a protective artificial coma with an uncertain vital and functional prognosis.

Training in D3 of Honduras

“I was always thinking about going back to Bordeaux, recovering and playing for them again, especially since I had two years left on my contract,” he explains. “That was my plan. Unfortunately, the team went bankrupt. My idea was to go back to train in Bordeaux and play there again. And when that happened, practically all the plans changed and today I I’m without a team.”

The player has since trained at his own club, in the third division in Honduras, Panteras FC, in tribute to his celebration. He was also invited to train with the Honduras national team, as well as Club Deportivo Olimpia, one of Honduras’ biggest teams and his first club.

A return in January?

“I want to come back and show that I am 100%,” he assures. “The ideal would be for me to come back in January. I’ve already had tests with the doctor who told me that I’m fine, that I can return to the game and now I’m training. I’ve been training for five month and I always train with a head protector that would help me if I got hit.”

Before considering his return to the field, Alberth Elis still lived in doubt, taking time to recover from his head trauma: When I woke up (from the coma), I didn’t remember that I was footballer. I didn’t remember that I was in , I didn’t remember that I was Honduran. The doctors thought it would be difficult for me to recover.”
