Euro 2024: the Blues could play at the same time as the first round of the legislative elections

the essential
The French team can play a possible round of 16 at the same time as the first round of the legislative elections on June 30. A headache for broadcasters.

What if the legislative elections were going to cause headaches for Euro 2024 TV broadcasters? There is a probability that Didier Deschamps’ Blues will play a round of 16 on the same day as the first round of voting on June 30.

The French team has three solutions to qualify for the round of 16: finish first or second in their group, or finish among the best thirds in the group stage. In the first two cases, the Blues will not disrupt the broadcast of the legislative elections.

But if Kylian Mbappé and his teammates finish in the best thirds then they would play their round of 16 on June 30. Either on M6 at 6 p.m. if their opponent is the first in group C (Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England). Or on TF1 at 9 p.m. if they fall against the first in group B (Croatia, Spain, Albania, Italy).

Towards a new delayed broadcast?

In the event of a match on TF1 in prime time on June 30, TV broadcasters would have to rack their brains to find a solution to broadcast the match in the middle of the first round election night.

While Emmanuel Macron had just announced the dissolution of the assembly on the evening of Sunday June 9, the kickoff of the friendly match between France and Canada was whistled. Faced with the historic initiative of the President of the Republic, TF1 then chose to postpone the start of the match by 15 minutes.

This choice was made easier by the stakes of the Blues match, without any real interest. But a round of 16 of Euro 2024 would reshuffle the cards. The private channel, normally happy to broadcast the French team which boosts its audiences, would then have to turn its program upside down. She has three weeks to think about it unless the Blues help them by finishing in the first two places in their group… Or by being eliminated in the group stages.
