Manchester City slides towards crisis

The heavy defeat in Lisbon in the Champions League confirms the bad luck of Pep Guardiola’s club.

Manchester City was crushed this Tuesday 4-1 by Ruben Amorin’s Sporting in Lisbon. A setback which extends a series of defeats (three in a row) after a 2-1 elimination in the Carabao Cup (League Cup) against Tottenham and a 2-1 defeat in the Premiership against Bournemouth. “This hasn’t happened in the Pep era since April 2018, and if City were to lose to Brighton next weekend it would be an unprecedented run of four consecutive defeats for Guardiola in Manchester. City had not conceded four goals in Europe since October 2016 (4-0 against Barca) and Pep ended his streak of 25 matches without defeat in the Champions League (excluding defeats on penalties) since May 2022. The crisis of results is there, even if City still have the excuse of being very much alive in the Premier League (second, two points behind Liverpool); to be sixth, at least momentarily, in the Champions League (seven points in four matches) and to have already won the Community Shield in August (on penalties against Manchester United)”underlines Marca.
