The defense of the Red Devils has been the target of mockery for several years. Many people believe that Belgium will never win anything with players like Wout Faes, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Arthur Theate.
Domenico Tedesco can, however, count on a great talent: Matte Smets. Called up for the first time by the Red Devils during the last international break, the Genk defender seems to be improving from week to week.
Vanhaezebrouck adores Matte Smets
According to Hein Vanhaezebrouck, the former Saint-Trond defender will have a very good career: “In a few years, he will be the best Belgian defender. He is a boy we have not finished hearing about. He has simply everything to succeed. Plus, he’s a very down-to-earth guy, focused from start to finish.”
The former Ghent coach goes even further: “He is very good with the ball, strong in duels, good with his head. He can also accelerate the game, break lines and send superb diagonals like Vincent Kompany, Walter Meeuws or Franz Beckenbauer in the past.”
Before concluding: “You can barely see how easily he does all this. I also have the impression that he is faster than before. Mentally, he seems strong, although I have heard that he was superstitious. But he shouldn’t spend too much energy on that.”
Genk will fill their pockets
As a reminder, Genk managed to attract Matte Smets for just 2 million euros last summer. Knowing the strength of the Limburg leaders in the negotiations, we can expect that the young defender will be sold for a good ten million euros in the months or years to come.
