Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees have finally decided to continue their association.
On Saturday, the pitcher opted out of his contract. However, both parties reversed this decision, with the intention of signing an extension. They had until 5 p.m. today to come to an agreement.
He retains his original $144 million contract for the next four years and discussions on an extension will continue.
Cole had already announced his intentions the day after the Yankees lost to the Dodgers in the World Series. His nine-year, $324 million contract, agreed before the 2020 season, gave him the right to opt out of the deal after the 2024 World Series. He said, however, that the Yankees could reverse the opt-out by adding another year.
The move gives the Yankees a potential rotation of six starting pitchers. The group includes Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes and Marcus Stroman.
The 34-year-old ace was among Major League Baseball’s best pitchers during his first five years with the Yankees, winning the Cy Young Award in 2023.
After an elbow injury kept him sidelined for the first two and a half months of the 2024 season, he returned to make 17 starts, posting a 3.41 ERA and striking out 99 batters. taken in 95 innings while allowing 29 walks and allowing 11 home runs.
He made five postseason starts, with a 2.17 ERA in 29 innings.
