this Sunday, Aubin Sparfel somehow touched the coin of last season’s U19 World Cup. On February 4 in Tabor, the Vosges rider seemed destined for the title of world champion before suffering a puncture at the very end of the course. This twist of fate, the member of the Golbéen cycle and the AG2R Décathlon U19 team was this time the lucky beneficiary from Pontevedra (Spain).

Starting from the third row because he was competing in his first international level race in his new age category (U23), Aubin Sparfel (18 years old) immediately positioned himself among the strong men of this U23 European Championship.

On a dry route, not very selective and therefore very rolling, a leading trio then broke away but without ever widening a prohibitive gap. On the lookout in particular with his teammate Nathan Bommelel, the Vosges native hung on without calculating his efforts as usual. At the dawn of the last two laps, Aubin Sparfel threw his last strength into the battle by pushing with a Belgian clinging to his wheel. He seemed to be heading towards the 4e place but in cyclo-cross, a turnaround is never to be avoided.

And it was then that at the front the Dutchman David Haverdings saw his chain break as he passed the assistance post. The finish line loomed on the horizon and Aubin Sparfel did not ask for anything else and came to collect a bronze medal. A result that he fully appreciated: “I was a little crushed by the barriers. I was expecting a quick start, but then it landed in front which allowed me to come back. I am satisfied with this medal on a course with no significant difference in altitude,” declared the young man via a specialized site. Note that the day before, the Vosges cycling gem had filled his collection of awards with silver during the mixed relay.

Jeanne Duterne in the top 10

The Vosges crossmen were definitely in spirit this Sunday in Galicia. For her first participation in an event of this caliber, Romarimontaine Jeanne Duterne ranked 7e rank of the U19 category just 30 seconds behind the winner of the day.
