Justin Barron once again left out tonight

With thirteen attackers, seven defenders and two goalkeepers, there is theoretically, each game night, one player per position not playing.

For goalkeepers, this is a case that is obviously a bit different and it is often possible to know which goalkeeper, logically, will play at what time. There are trends.

This evening? It will be Samuel Montembeault.

Offensively, it’s more often than not Michael Pezzetta who gets left out on game days. It’s rare that he’s been playing for a month, to put it in a little more precise terms.

But defensively? This is often where we question ourselves.

Mike Matheson, David Savard, Kaiden Guhle and Lane Hutson, if healthy, play. That currently leaves Arber Xhekaj, Justin Barron and Jayden Struble in a three-way rotation – for two positions.

And tonight, it’s Justin Barron who will skip his turn. A bit like Saturday, then.

We must think that the coach said to himself that the club had played better defensively on Saturday, which means that he did not want to break the pattern. But clearly, Struble and (especially) Xhekaj are at risk even if they play tonight.

Guys have to earn their job every day. Tonight, even if Calgary is not an NHL powerhouse, it will be a good test.
